It's ironic, isn't it?

Birth creates a family. Usually.

And yet — families aren't born. They're built.

Having kids doesn't automatically make you a family. A shared last name doesn't automatically create belonging or acceptance. Living under the same roof doesn't guarantee anyone actually knows each other.

After over 30 years of ministry and almost 20 years as a Navy chaplain, I've sat with families on the best days of their lives. And on the worst.

The difference between the families that made it and the ones that didn't?

It wasn't luck. It wasn't circumstance.

It was intention.

The families that thrived decided — on purpose — to build something together. One conversation at a time. One meal at a time. One decision at a time.

Tonight, try this: Ask your family, "What's one thing that makes our family different from other families?"

Then listen. Really listen.

That's a brick in the foundation you're building.

P.S. What's one tradition that makes YOUR family uniquely yours?

Here’s a simple recipe to try tonight!

Beefy Tomato & Corn Pasta Bake

A dairy-free casserole-style pasta dish baked with ground beef, sweet corn, and a robust tomato sauce. Simple American comfort food.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 12 oz dried pasta (rotini or penne)

  • 2 cans tomato sauce or big jar of marinara sauce

  • 1 can (15 oz) corn, drained

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp oregano

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (dairy-free)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • Add spice or other items (we topped ours with pepperoni) to make it yours.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. Cook pasta in boiling salted water for 2 minutes less than package directions (it will finish in the oven). Drain.

  3. In a skillet, brown the ground beef. Drain fat. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, tomato sauce, and corn.

  4. Combine the cooked pasta with the beef sauce mixture and transfer to the baking dish.

  5. Mix breadcrumbs with olive oil and sprinkle over the top.

  6. Bake for 20 minutes until the top is golden and edges are bubbly.
